POLICE BRUTALITY

 GEORGE FLOYD

  • Was a 46-year-old African American

  • Arrested after a convenience store employee told police George Floyd bought cigarettes with counterfeit $20 bill

  • Officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd's neck for over 9 minutes, causing his death

  • George Floyd was already in handcuffs, unarmed, and repeatedly cried out that "he couldn't breathe"

  • Derek Chauvin was also reportedly been subject to complaints accusing him of misconduct during his 18 years on Minneapolis police force.

 DAUNTE WRIGHT

  • Was a 20-year-old African American

  • Happened almost a year later after George Floyd's death

  • Officer Kim Potter shot and killed Daunte Wright after mistaking her taser for a gun

  • Daunte Wright was also unarmed

Both killings, just two of many high-profile instances in which unarmed Black men have died at the hands of law enforcement over the past decade.

Police Homicide Stats

More than 12,000 accounts of police homicides between the years 1980 and 2012.

Young Black men were 21 times as likely to be fatally shot by law enforcement as were their white peers.

White officers were responsible for 68% of police killings of people of color.

CAll to action
We need to make our police forces in the U.S. train like some European countries that have a similar police program. U.S. police officers spend 21 weeks on average training, whereas the European countries can last more than 3 years. We don't need to get rid of our police force. Instead, we should re-fund our police and put our money into de-escalation experts and mental health training.
